Worn by Henry Irving as 'Richard III'. London Museum catalogue 'Stage Costume and Accessories', M.R. Holmes (1968), No. 59 on p. 35: "Brown velvet shoes with high tongues, worn originally by Irving as Richard III in this production [Richard III, 1877 (Mrs Bateman's management)], when they had one heel higher than the other, and subsequently altered, by the removal of the high heel, for him to wear as Shylock in The Merchant of Venice."
