Hat, military uniform hat
Royal Lancers military uniform hat. 19th century. Shape of crown (tapers inwards at the middle and then outwards into a square top) based on Polish 'schapka' or Czapka. Lower portion of crown made from black leather with a metal lion shaped boss, moulded in relief at either side, with a metal linked chain (chin strap?) attached to the bosses. At the front of crown is a metal regimental badge, featuring a coat of arms and lettering 'Royal Lancers' and the names of areas in India as they were know in the 19th century. Crown tapers outwards into a square stiffened top with metal oak leak decoration at the four corners. Stiff leather downwards pointing peak, with numbers ' 730 406 stamped on the underside. Crown lined in a black cotton / linen.
