The veil is said to have been designed by Princess Louise, although the roses, ferns and butterflies are to be found on other Honiton laces of the 1860s, notably those made for John Tucker of Branscombe and designed by his daughter, Mary. The veil was purchased at Sotheby (Belgravia) from a collection of lace sold by HRH The Duke of Kent. See also the matching handkerchief, 82.378. Illus: The Art Journal Catalogue of the 1871 South Kensington Exhibition, p 12. The veil was exhibited by Howell and James of Regent Street (who had exhibited the prize-winning flounce by John Tucker in 1862). The caption describes the veil as being 'designed after a sketch by the Princess'.
