Coat, waterman's coat

Orange wool waterman's coat lined with black twilled wool, as worn on river barges, associated with the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. There is no badge holder on the arm which means it was not worn by a competitor in the annual Doggett race.

The coat is single breasted, with the body cut in three pieces, two front and sides in one and one shaped centre back. There is a stand collar with two buttons either side of neck. The coat fastens at the centre front with 11 buttons (two missing) and buttonholes. The skirt is cut in one piece, tightly gauge pleated and joined to body at low waist level. There is a scalloped vertical slit at cuffs with a smaller version of the same buttons as the front. Originally there were ten but now only one on the left sleeve.

The cuff is embroidered with the trefoil pattern standard on waterman's coats, with parallel line details. It is also embroidered at the epaulette with series of small square crosses, all in navy silk thread. The back arm, shoulder and back sides seams are all piped in navy blue wool, another standard feature. On the face of buttons is depicted a statue of justice over a quartered shield which is edged by a band on which is imprinted: "Justitia, Virtutum, Regina".
