An inscription written in ink on a fabric patch at the inside back lining reads: 'This dress belonged to my Grandmother Mrs. Susannah Norman Smith of Kingston-on-Thames. Born 15th August 1782 Died 28th March 1870. She was a descendant of Sir John Norman, Lord Mayor of London 1453; First Lord Mayor to go to Westminster by barge Sig: Clara Kyburn Kennedy'
