Skirt
Elephant grey silk taffeta skirt, part of a dress ensemble, cut in five straight panels lined throughout with book muslin. This style of flounce skirt was extremely popular at this date, with the flounces being woven to shape and cut along the edges to give a scalloped effect. Two deep flounces are gathered to the skirt, approximately 19 inches or 482 mm deep. The first is placed about two inches down from the waist and slightly overlaps the second. The flounces have scalloped and pinked edges and deep horizontal bands of cream and grey striped silk tartan ribbon. The deep hem is lined with donkey-brown colour silesia stiffening. The actual hem edge is covered with woollen braid tape to protect the fabic from wear. The waistline is now unpicked, but it was once made into flat pleats and gathers. There is an inside pocket in one seam.
