Printed Ephemera — 1837-11-20
Mrs Honey as Don Juan
Theatrical souvenir plates engraved with a portrait of the actress Mrs Honey in the role of Don Juan. Published on November 20 1837 such sheets would have been sold plain as theatrical souvenirs for colouring and tinselling at home.
Mrs Honey made her name playing 'breeches roles'. Like the manager and actress Madame Vestris, Mrs Honey played male roles and scandalized audiences by showing their legs. Mrs Honey was the daughter of the actress and manageress Mrs Young, who worked with Samuel Phelps. Mrs Honey was a widow, and managed the City of London Theatre from 1837.
