Lady Sale in Afghanistan
Print engraved with an equestrian portrait of the character Lady Sale on horseback in Afghanistan. The portrait is part of a series of equestrian prints published by A.Park numbered 'No32 horses'. Such portraits of heroic, allegorical and historical figures would have been sold plain for colouring and tinselling at home.
Lady Florentia Sale (1790-1853), was the wife of Major-General Sir Robert Henry Sale. Lady Sale was captured during the First Afghan War of 1842 and wrote her journal in captivity. The journal was published and became a bestseller.
