Printed Ephemera — 1840-1865
Mrs Egerton as Helen Macgregor
Theatrical souvenir sheet engraved with a portrait of the actress Mrs Egerton in the role of Helen Macgregor. The portrait is incomplete as the figure has been cut out, perhaps to be mounted on a new background. Marked 'No.10 new' such portraits would have been sold as theatrical souvenirs.
Egerton began acting at the age of 21, following the death of her father. She moved to London via Bath and Birmingham and her early roles in London were of limited success. In March 1816 she performed two melodramatic roles at the Covent Garden theatre. The first was a Daniel Terry play, and the second was Helen Macgregor. Egerton moved to the Surrey Theatre and Drury Lane before her husband took over management of Sadler's Wells. She worked with him until his death in 1835, when she retired.
