Fashion — 2011
Banner
This banner was made in the run-up to the Occupy LSX protest where activists attempted to occupy the London Stock Exchange at Paternoster Square on 15 October 2011. The maker Thomas Daniell and his friends walked around inside the banner on the day of the protest to the amusement of onlookers. Once the camp had been established outside St Paul's Cathedral the banner was suspended on a rope between two trees. The 'Grow the Real Economy' slogan was inspired by 'The Great Transition' published by the New Economics Foundation. According to Thomas the slogan was intended, to 'have an extra dig at the virtuality of casino style finance that we knew the 'We are the 99%' protest was targeting.' The slogan 'Compost Capitalism' was chosen for the following reason:
'We decided 'Compost Capitalism' was better than any other anti-capitalist slogan because rather than being a negative statement, it implies the process of natural transformation and asserts the positive idea of ecology in economics, which we believed to be important and widely shared in the Occupy movement'.
