Nightdress
Pupils at Mrs Newcomen's School for Girls in Southwark made this hand-sewn embroidered silk nightdress some time between 1922 and 1934. The nightdress was donated to the Museum of London by the nephew of Miss Ruth Roberts, a former headmistress of the school.
The curriculum at the school, which was classified as a 'Domestic Economy Trade School', included needlework, cookery, laundry work and housewifery as well as lessons in literacy and numeracy. The school was named after, and partly funded by, Elizabeth Newcomen (1605-1675) who had left money in her will to clothe and educate poor children in the parish of St Saviour.
Peach silk trimmed at neckline, cream cotton lace with floral pattern outlined pink satin cord and scattered flowers in satin stitch; armholes trimmed cotton lace with tatted edge. Hemline decorative stitiching in cream silk. Sleeveless with v-neck at front and tucks at front shoulders.
