Shell, oyster shell
Forty fragments of oyster shell found on an archaeological excavation in Church Street, Isleworth, close to Kew Gardens. Oyster shells are often found in rubbish dumps dating from the Roman period into the 19th century. Oysters were a popular meal for poorer Londoners as they were a lot cheaper than they are today. Oysters only became a luxury after the oyster beds were exhausted through over-fishing and pollution in the 1850s.
