Finishing Skivers and Persians for Hat Linings and Boot purposes
This photograph shows the process of manufacturing leather at Bevington & Sons, Neckinger Mills, Bermondsey and St. Thomas's Street, Southwark. 23 year old Geoffrey Bevington, a keen amateur photographer, recorded this scene among others for display on the firm's stand at the 1862 International Exhibition in South Kensington. Three men are finishing skivers and persians for hat linings and boot making outside the factory building. An overseer stands behind them and an election poster saying 'Layard for Southwark!' is stuck to a window. Bevington & Sons Leather Manufactory was established in 1795.
