Cleansing and Paring Sheep Skins for Wool Rugs
This photograph shows the process of manufacturing leather at Bevington & Sons, Neckinger Mills, Bermondsey and St. Thomas's Street, Southwark. 23 year old Geoffrey Bevington, a keen amateur photographer, recorded this scene among others for display on the firm's stand at the 1862 International Exhibition in South Kensington. Three men are cleansing and paring sheep skins for wool rugs outside the factory building, with an overseer in the centre. A clock hanging on the brick wall records the time of 1.40 pm. Bevington & Sons Leather Manufactory was established in 1795.
