The wharfside at Hough's paper mills, Limehouse
This photograph is of the wharfside at Hough's paper mills in Limehouse. It includes moored sailing barges and several workers who can be seen on the barge and in the window of the mills. The Grapes public house is just visible beyond this.
The donor's grandfather, James John Doree of Huguenot descent, also features in the photograph. He worked for Robert Hough for 50 years as a both a docker and a labourer. During World War One, he served with the Royal Horse Artillery and it is thought that one of his officers was a member of the Hough family, who owned the paper mill.
