Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 2007
London
Ewan Gibbs' print of Westminster reduces the site of political power to a hazy apparition. The print is a linocut, a medium normally used to make bold, expressive images. Here, however, using a technique of great delicacy, Gibbs has created an image constructed of tiny marks of varying degrees of density. The use of the print medium, and the nocturnal riverside setting make clear references to the work of the American artist, James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903).
Gibbs was born in London in 1973 and studied at Goldsmith's College of Art. His highly detailed drawings and prints use marks made within a grid to create up a coherent image. He is particularly well known for his images of London and New York landmarks.
