Sculpture, carved block

This block is in two pieces: 80.325/15a and 80.325/15b. Part b joins the front right hand side of Part a perfectly. The block was broken in antiquity.

The front shows on the left a pilaster containing acanthus-spray decoration with one upright and one curving leaf, part of a repeating motif seen also on blocks numbered 80.325/14, 80.325/16 and 80.325/17. On the right, in a recess, is a human limb identified as an arm by the exact fit with the adjacent block showing Hercules' muscular torso.

The left hand side has a decorated pilaster of imbricated leaves, pointing downwards in groups of three on the right. Moving left, a plain concave band of cyma reversa moulding frames part of a small figure cut off at the shoulder and knee. The person appears to be standing facing left at a three-quarter front and, with arm bent at elbow behind, is carrying perhaps a basket or a net. Surrounding the figure is a curving band, either part of an arch or a circular roundel. It is possible this curve links the block to the rest of the scheme, perhaps forming the tail of those trailing elements on block 80.325/19.

No fixing holes survive. Carved from oolitic limestone, it was found with other similar stones, reused as building material in the Roman riverside wall.
