Handkerchief, commemorative handkerchief
Cotton handkerchief commemorating the 1891 census, printed in black on white ground. Topical images were often found on handkerchiefs throughout their history, although between 1760 and 1900 the satirical treatment of current issues was most prevalent. The census was first carried out in England and Scotland in 1801, and has been taken every ten years since, except in wartime.
One large diagonal central figure of elegant lady in walking dress with elaborate fan on the road to 1891. Surrounded by vignettes caricaturing the reaction of different groups and individuals to the census. Two sides hemmed and two sides slevedge.
