Bowles's New Travelling Map of England and Wales
Silk handkerchief map, printed in black ink from an engraved plate, 1778, with coastlines and country boundaries highlighted in colours. the map was carried in a printed linen pocket book purse. Although purses were no doubt a common method of protecting printed silk maps, this is the only known pair known to have survived intact.
Top right vignette travelling scene and "BOWLES's New Travelling Map of England and Wales Exhibiting all the Direct and principal Cross Roads with the Distances in Measured Miles - Printed for Carington Bowles, 69 St. Paul's Churchyard, London. Published as the Act directs 2nd July 1778". Poor condition, edges badly damaged, much split where it has formerly been kept folded.
