Crystal Palace
Cotton; plate and block print in black dye, late nineteenth century. Between 1852 and 1854 the Crystal Palace was relocated in a slightly altered form at Sydenham. Although the elaborate fountains in the gardens seldom worked fully it remained a popular tourist attraction until it burnt down in 1936. This handkerchief, with a pre-printed border advertising Keen's bicycles and Bryant and May matches, was plate printed in the machinery department at Sydenham.
White cotton handkerchief printed in black from engraved plate. Black border, probably block printed; machine hemming. Crystal Palace with people in costumes of 1850s. Captioned: "Crystal Palace. Printed in the Machinery Department" together with details about dimensions of the building and grounds.
