Handkerchief, commemorative handkerchief
Linen handkerchief; lithographic print in blue ink by 'The Daily Mail' about 1900. On October 31st 1899 Rudyard Kipling donated his poem, 'The Absent Minded Beggar' to The Daily Mail; his fee and any funds raised were to benefit soldiers of the Boer War (1899-1902). The poem was used on many items - the handkerchiefs sold for one shilling each - and, in total, £340,000 (£165,000 from The Daily mail) was raised.
Ribbed border printed in light navy blue from litho plate; machine hemming. Music and words of "The Absent Minded Beggar" by Kipling and Sullivan, with map of Transvaal and portraits of Queen Victoria and Lord Roberts. Note: "Copyright by The Daily Mail Publishing Co. Ltd. London". Slight discolouration overall; two darker stains in upper right border.
