Handkerchief, commemorative handkerchief
Handkerchief bearing a print of the Thames Tunnel. Silk dyed red; plate print in black ink with watercolours added by hand, 1843. The Thames tunnel, from Rotherhithe to Wapping, (now known as the Rotherhithe tunnel), was opened on 25th March 1843. Designed by Sir Marc Isambard Brunel and started in 1824, it was not finally completed until the end of 1842. The illustrations are similar to those in 'Thames Tunnel' published by W Warrington, engraver and printer in 1836.
