Captain Austin's expedition in search of Sir John Franklin
Cotton handkerchief; lithographic print in dark brown ink, 1850. Sir John Franklin (1786-1847), Arctic explorer, set out in May 1845 to find the north west passage. His ships were last seen in July of that year. It was fourteen years later, after over 40 relief expeditions including the Admiralty relief expedition of 1850 commemorated on this handkerchief, that the expedition was found to have failed, due to both ships foundering, the survivors subsequently dying of starvation.
