Corset
Corset made of light, medium blue, ribbed silk with cream cotton lining. The corset is front fastening, with metal busks and with four keyhole and stud fasteners. The opening centre back has metal eyelets for lacing. Whalebone is used throughout to shape the corset. The edges at the top, bottom, and along the back openings are bound with dark blue silk ribbon. The cream linen lining appears to have been restitched and was possibly from another corset.
The corset is believed to have been shown at the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park by Madame Roxy Anne Caplin a staymaker of Berners Street, London, who, with her husband, invented and patented many improvements to corsets between 1838 and 1860.
