Our Lady of Walsingham, Annunciation badge
Pilgrim badge from the shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham at Walsingham Priory. This badge depicts a lily growing from a flagon with a pedestal base. The lily symbolises Mary’s purity, innocence and the immaculate conception of Christ. This lily would have had three blooms (though one has broken off), which show Mary’s virginity before, during and after Christ’s birth.
The shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham in Norfolk was a popular pilgrimage destination in the medieval period, especially after Henry III made a series of pilgrimages there in the 13th century.
