Sculpture, carved block
This forms the left-hand section of a circular carved relief, depicting the head of Abundance or the personification of the season of Summer or Autumn. Block number 80.325/11 completes the right hand part of the figure. The lower part of the face is broken from both sections.
The deep relief carving shows a youthful male head with grapes and vine leaves for hair, and three drooping ears of corn, redolent of the harvest, radiate from each side. On this block, to the left of the mask, the figure of a ram or antelope may be seen, with head down and curving horns upright, though this identification is not secure.
Lewis holes on the top and clamp holes in the top sides show where this stone was joined to others in forming a monumental arch in Roman London, which was demolished in the later Roman period. Carved from oolitic limestone, it was found with other similar stones, reused as building material in the riverside wall built to protect Roman London between the 270s and 280s CE.
