Printed Ephemera
Flag, charity lapel flag
Charity lapel flag issued to raise funds for the Queen's Hospital for children, Hackney Road. The paper lithographed emblem is printed on one side with a medallion portrait of Queen Alexandra surrounded by a rose border. On the reverse is printed 'The Queen's Hospital for Children Hackney Road'. The hospital had been founded during a cholera epidemic of 1866 by two sisters. In 1911 it opened a branch in Bexhill-on-Sea where children could continue their recovery in the sea air away from the polluted East End.
The flag was probably sold on Alexandra Rose Day, an annual flag day established by Queen Alexandra in 1912 that raised large sums of money for London hospitals.
