Boot, ankle boot
Pair of woman's ankle boots made of pale blue kid leather, fastening with thirteen white coloured buttons each. The heel is stamped 'BURGESS', and the natural linen lining is stamped 'C.O.BURGESS/FLEXURA/NO 27096/286/OXFORD STREET', inscribed 'No 27096'.
According to the shoe historian June Swann, Charles Offord Burgess was listed in a London trade directory of 1872 as 'Bootmaker, scientific last maker and inventor of the Flexura boot'. He was based at 29A Oxford Street until 1881. in 1882 he is listed at 66 Oxford Street, moving to 160 Regent Street in 1886 where he remained until 1894; in 1895 he was listed as 'Burgess & Co' at 206 Regent Street until 1900; by 1908 he was listed as 'Burgess & Deroy, Sussex Place'.
