Lieut Rose R.N. and the Boxers

Poster for a 1911 black and white silent film called 'Lieutentant Rose R.N. and the Boxers', directed by Percy Stow. The film starred P.G. Norgate as Lieutentant Rose, a character that appeared in several adventure films made by the Clarendon Film Company. This poster shows the Lieutenant stabbing a Chinese Boxer. The film related to the 1900 Boxer Rising, a rebellion against Western moves to dominate trade in China. The Boxers, as they were known in the West, were members of a secret society established in northern China to resist foreign intervention. In June 1900 they attempted to drive out foreigners from Beijing and Tianjin with the support of the Empress of China, but a coalition of international troops prevented them.
