Photography — C. 1909
Waterloo Bridge
This unusual perspective shows the lower arch of Waterloo Bridge with the massive buttress on the right. The photographer would have stood on the lower steps to capture this view which marked a development from the documentary photographs of London popularised at the time.
Alvin Langdon Coburn (1882-1966) was an American photographer who travelled to London and created a new vision of the city. Influenced by a photographic Pictorial style he manipulated imagery to create a blurred atmospheric look in keeping with the foggy aesthetic of this heavily industrialised city.
