Journal des Demoiselles
Fashion plate from fashion periodical the ‘Journal des Demoiselles’. It shows five women wearing dresses, coats and bonnets. The dresses are worn over crinolines. Crinolines made of steel hoops gave skirts a bell shape. They were popular from the mid 1850s to the early 1860s.
