This model of a swimheaded budget sterned lighter is typical of the type of steel lighter or dumb barge operating on the Thames from the late 1940s. The hull is painted black with a red interior. Lighters were used for a number of tasks in the working port including transporting cargoes between the lower docks and wharves and carrying away refuse and rubbish. Lightermen served a seven year apprenticeship. As well as learning how to handle craft their training including knowledge of the River, its currents and tides as well as the location of all the wharves along the Thames.
