Jacket
Tulle and sequin skirt and denim jacket, 2004. Designed by Ashish.
This short tailored denim jacket fuses ideas of traditional English dress with the colour and exuberance of Indian design. The tailored shape, button fastenings and Argyll pattern are subverted by the use of washed denim fabric and sequins. Through the centre of the lozenges is a criss-cross pattern of strips of denim sewn in place by lines of stitching applied centrally with the ends left raw. The whole jacket is lined in a silk twill, printed with large white spots and stylised large cream and pink roses with green leaves on a mauve background.
Born in Delhi, Ashish trained at Middlesex University and Central St Martins. His work was championed by the forward-looking boutique Browns Focus who gave him his first order in 2001. His designs are made up in India in his own workrooms and are influenced by his strong Indian roots and his life and education in Western Europe, celebrating pop culture and kitsch, combining street wear and glamour.
