Dress
Hand-printed silk chiffon dress, spring/summer 2004. Fabric and dress designed by Jonathan Saunders
This striking fabric incorporates large diamond shapes printed with criss-crossing lines that create a series of squares that gradually increase in size. One of these diamond shapes is placed at the centre front of the dress. Its position emphasises the cleavage, revealed by the dress's low neckline, and its drop waist, which dips at the centre front and back. Unusually, Saunders designs prints tailored to the shape of the garments in his collections, rather than the reverse. The dress is sleeveless and supported by shoulder straps that have been extended, like a pair of braces, down the front of the dress to the waist. They are topstitched in place and are trimmed at the waist with a large button. The full skirt has been gathered into the waistband. The dress is lined with white silk georgette.
The dress was featured on the front cover of British Vogue in January 2004. Jonathan Saunders graduated with an MA in Printed Textiles from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in 2002. He is a consultant for Pucci.
