Working History — 1895-1900
Table, electrophone table
The Electrophone enabled people to listen to theatrical performances, concerts and church services from the convenience of their own home. The Electrophone service was transmitted via the network of the National Telephone Company and later that of the General Post Office after the former was nationalised. This Electrophone table has four headsets for multiple users and was probably used in a club or another social venue. The Electrophone declined in popularity in the 1920s owing to competition from radio broadcasting.
