Working History — 1992
Helmet, safety helmet
This safety helmet was worn by a BT engineer carrying out emergency work following the Provisional IRA bomb attack at Bishopsgate on the 23 April 1993.
Just prior to its ceasefire in 1994, the IRA attacked two commercial targets in the City of London. On the 10 April 1992, a massive bomb exploded outside the Baltic Exchange on St Mary Axe killing three people. Both bombs were the work of the IRA's South Armagh Brigade. The Bishopsgate bomb was driven to the City in a lorry from Northern Ireland. A photographer, Edward Henty, was killed in the explosion.
The Provisional IRA leadership targeted the City of London as Britain's financial heart, thereby aiming to cause maximum economic damage. The Bishopsgate bomb caused over £350 million worth of damage to the City.
