Embroidery
Mary Buckle worked, or embroidered, this panel for a piano screen in satin stitch on green silk satin in coloured silks in tones of brown, red, orange, yellow and cream. Lewis F. Day designed the pattern of a lyre with a swan's head at each side, amidst a garland of chrysanthemums, and it won a medal at the Chicago Exhibition. Day and Buckle wrote a number of books together on embroidery.
Lewis F. Day was an original committee member of the Arts and Crafts Society, founded in 1888. Professor Pevnser called Day "the most distinguished industrial artist of his generation". Although known as a writer and lecturer, Day also designed textiles, wallpaper and stained glass.
