Printed Ephemera — 1859
Share, share certificate
A share certificate for Brunel's ship 'The Great Eastern', issued in 1859.
Launching Brunel's ship on the Isle of Dogs proved to be so difficult that it cost the Eastern Steam Navigation Company, who owned the vessel, one third of the entire budget for building and fitting out the ship itself. The cost of the launch brought the company close to bankruptcy, so to stave off disaster, a new company was formed - The Great Ship Company. This issued shares to raise funds to purchase and fit out the ship, following which the Eastern Steam Navigation Company went into liquidation. Fitting out was completed in August 1859 and the ship set sail on her maiden voyage on 7 September.
