Printed Ephemera — 1929
Invitation, wedding invitation
This invitation refers to the marriage of Lily Hart and Joe Silver, two members of London's Jewish community. Their wedding reception took place in Cottage Grove, in the Brixton area of South London. This was not an area particularly associated with a high Jewish population, unlike the location of the he Kosher caterer used by the couple, V Schaverien located in Stepney in the heart of London's Jewish East End. However the Brixton Jewish community was substantial enough to have established, in 1905, a local synagogue at 49 Effra Road. In 1930 the year following the wedding the synagogue had 356 male seat holders. This synagogue was located about a 20 minute walk away from the Imperial Rooms in Cottage Grove and it is possible the marriage took place in the synagogue before the reception. The high quality of the personally printed invitation, together with the extensive menu and live music, implies this wedding would have been relatively expensive.
