Working History — C. 1880-1976
Barrel
M Chaikin & Co owned a kosher wine-making workshop and distillery and off-licence in Spitalfields. This barrel was used in its workshop in a basement on the corner of Brick Lane and Fournier Street to store wine before it was bottled. The company produced wines in Palestine as well as the UK. From the late 19th century it supplied London's East End Jewish community with wines and spirits that complied with the dietary requirements of the Jewish faith. Dried fruit such as raisins and sultanas were used instead of grapes.
