Bottle corking machine
This bottle-corking machine was used in Mendel Chaikin's kosher wine-making and distilling business in Spitalfields. He opened his business in the late 1890s after emigrating from Russia.
The Chaikin firm produced wine and spirits in the basement of the Great Synagogue at 59 Brick Lane. The shop was located at numbers 72 and 74. Later Chaikin's business expanded to premises on nearby Commercial Road and Sandringham Road in Dalston. The company continued to trade on Brick Lane until 1976. The Chaikin name can still be seen in a mosaic pattern on the doorstep of number 74 Brick Lane.
