Portrait of Gamaliel Pye
This is a three-quarter length portrait of a gentleman identified as Gamaliell Pye (about 1514-1596). The Senior Warden of the Butchers' Company, Pye was responsible for London's meat-markets at St Nicholas Shambles, Eastcheap and the Stocks. He also acquired grazing lands in Bermondsey and 'dyvers howses Tenements and Gardens' in Pentecost Lane, near Smithfield. In this portrait by an unknown artist, Pye clasps a money bag in his right hand - a symbol of his wealth - while his other hand, with a prominent ring on the forefinger, rests on a table. The inscription behind him reads 'ATATIS SUA 81' and 'ANO DNI 1596'.
