The Golliwogg's Fox Hunt
Bertha and Florence Upton were a mother and daughter team who created the children’s storybook character the ‘Golliwogg’. The character appeared in a series of thirteen books published between 1895 and 1909. These included ‘The Golliwogg’s Fox Hunt’, whose front cover is illustrated here. The golliwog also became popular as a children’s toy. However, the figure of the Black minstrel that the golliwog was based on is now acknowledged as an outdated racist stereotype. Thus the golliwog’s status is increasingly controversial.
