Jack Sheppard 4/27: The name on the beam
This etching shows Jack sheppard carving 'the name on the beam' in which the workshop is crowded with carpentry tools, lumbers, posters and gallows, all relating to the carpenter's profession. Jack's face was recognised as being attractive but marred by signs of coarse indulgence.
Jack Sheppard is a novel by William Harrison Ainsworth which was published in serial form in Bentley's Miscellany from 1839-1840 with illustrations by George Cruikshank. It is derived from a true-life story of an eighteenth-century criminal who escaped from prison four times before being caught and hanged.
Jack Sheppard was published at the same time as Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist.
