Printed Ephemera — 1820-1840
Timetable
Coach timetable printed with the destination and departure times of stage and mail coahces departing from the White Horse Inn at Fetter Lane. Such timetables would be pasted at the entrance to all coaching inns to advertise the services run from that destination. The coaching proprietor William Chaplin and Company operated both long-distance and short-stage services from the Inn including coaches to all the major cities. Chaplin was London's largest proprietor of stage and mail coaches. By 1836 he operated over 100 coaches out of three coaching inns. A shrewd businessman, Chaplin survived the decline of the stagecoach by moving into omnibuses. He also negotiated a contract with the London and Birmingham Railway to transport freight from the railway terminus into the city centre.
