Finger ring, mourning ring
This finger ring was made to commemorate the death of the politician John Wilkes. The gold shank is enamelled in black with a narrow border of white enamel framing the inscription 'JOHN.WILKES.ESQ:DIED.26.DEC.1797.AGED.70.'
The inside of the shank is engraved with the words 'Alderman and Chamberlain of the City of London'.
