Tankard
A conical tankard of half-pint capacity with an everted rim and decorative fillets around the base. The hollow-cast swept handle has a soldered on thumbplate with the engraved ownership triad of ‘G’ over ‘G’ and ‘S’ . The body is insribed: ‘Geo Gammond’ . There is a crowned WR verification mark just below the rim to the left of the handle. The worn touch inside the base is probably that of Townsend & Compton, London, OP4795. John Townsend of 47 Prescott Street, Goodman’s Fields joined forces with Thomas Compton in c.1784. The partners had various business addresses at Booth Street, Spitalfields and Fenchurch Street and they were major exporters of pewter to the American colonies. The partnership with Compton continued until c.1806. Date: c.1790-95.
