Social History — 1900
Badge, lapel badge
Circular tin button badge with a celluloid covered paper union jack overlaid with an image of Major-General Robert Baden-Powell. Produced to commemorate Baden-Powell's role in raising the siege of the town of Mafeking during the Second Anglo-Boer War. This victory, in May 1900, was greeted with great patriotic fervour in London. Cheap, mass produced badges celebrating British victories in the Anglo-Boer war became popular souvenirs and could be easily purchased from London's street traders, always quick to cash in on the popular mood of celebration.
