Social History — C. 1981
Badge, lapel badge
This badge was produced by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), an organisation committed to the abolition of Britain's nuclear weapons. CND was formed at a mass public meeting in London in February 1958. Its founding members included the philosopher Bertrand Russell and the writer J.B. Priestley.
The movement underwent a massive resurgence in the 1980s as the United States stationed nuclear Cruise missiles on British soil. CND was able to organise some of the largest demonstrations in British history with hundreds of thousands taking to the streets of London in protest at nuclear weapons.
The badge features the slogan 'Fight War Not Wars'. It was purchased by a member of the Museum of London's staff from a CND street stall on Crouch End Broadway in 1981.
