Fire engine
The fire engineering firm Shand Mason and Company had its origins in the engine making business established by Samuel Phillips in Southwark in the second half of the eighteenth century. The company manufactured fire engines for the London Fire Engine Establishment after it was founded in 1833. Shand Mason displayed a brigade fire engine at the Great Exhibition in 1851. This portable manual fire engine was acquired by Shand Mason's great rivals, Merryweather and Sons, who took over the company in 1922.
